Hi Kids!

When I was a kid, my mum used to say:

And you know what? She was right. Writing makes you happier, braver, and more confident.

Your imagination is one of your greatest superpowers, and creative writing is how you flex those imagination muscles. It’s writing where you can just let your imagination fly. No rules except the ones you make. No limits except the ones you choose.

  • Builds self-confidence – You’ll feel proud of what you create.
  • Makes you mindful – You focus on the moment and forget your worries.
  • Boosts imagination – Your ideas can go anywhere you want them to.
  • Helps with emotions – Writing can untangle your thoughts, like talking to your best friend (and that friend is you).

When you write, you can turn your feelings, whether happy, sad, excited, or nervous, into stories, poems, or wild adventures. Writing can enhance clarity of thought. That means when you write about your feelings or create stories, you’re helping yourself understand and manage emotions better. It’s like having a conversation with your best friend, except that friend is you! That’s the reason journal writing is so popular and has so many positive outcomes. I will talk about Journal writing in another blog.

Writing also helps you practice something called mindfulness. The act of focusing solely on the task of writing can serve as a break from everyday worries and anxieties.

When my son moved to a new school, he felt shy and nervous. Making new friends wasn’t easy, and talking to strangers was even harder.

But he loved reading. So, I gave him fun writing prompts and a few treats, and he was soon writing about:

  • Wizards like Harry Potter
  • Adventurous kids building castles in backyards
  • Funny girls with six pigtails
  • Scary, silly, or magical stories

Guess what? Writing helped him feel more confident, and he started making friends more easily. That’s the magic of putting your imagination on paper. As he turns 13, I want him to get into blogging his thoughts, feelings or insights as he grows.

Here’s what you are start on for creative writing

Set a timer for 5 minutes. Write anything that pops into your head. Don’t worry about spelling or grammar just let your ideas flow.

Look at a picture, maybe a magical forest or a bustling marketplace. Ask yourself:

  • Who lives here?
  • What adventure is starting?
  • What mystery needs solving?

Mix unexpected traits:

  • A shy dragon
  • A robot who writes poetry
  • A pirate afraid of water but loves sailing through clouds
  • A detective who solves mysteries with talking vegetables

Before bed, turn your day into a magical tale.

  • Walking to school? Nope, you were leading a secret treasure hunt.
  • Math homework, or a secret code to save the world!

Spend 30 minutes on a bigger project, a series about your favourite characters, letters to your future self, or a family “newspaper” full of made-up (and funny) news.

Want to try? Pick one and start writing!

The moment you start writing, you are a writer. You don’t need perfect handwriting, big words, or fancy notebooks. You just need imagination, curiosity, and the courage to try. Your voice matters. Your stories matter. And the blank page is waiting for your magic.

So… what story will you write today? I would love to read what you have to share!
